Need opinion on my Application Profile [#permalink] New post 02 Jun 2009, 12:52
Hello. I am a 28 year old male professional and I'm thinking about going to B-School. I currently work as a computer programmer for a 65B health insurance. I've been promoted 2 times and I've spent most of my career in health insurance. I live in Los Angeles and am considering part-time programs at UCLA, USC, and NYU. I attended DePaul University for my undergrad with a cumulative GPA of 3.45. I did well in most of my courses, although I got a few Cs in math. I see going back to school as a career accelerator, as I want to pursuit technology management. I have NOT taken the GMAT exam yet, but I plan on enrolling in a GMAT training course. My target score is 700, but obviously I want the highest possible. I also do a lot of volunteer mentoring activities as well as public speaking training. Knowing the above, am I capable of getting into a top MBA school such as the ones listed above? An honest opinion is appreciated. Thanks!

chicago2la,

You didn't mention how strong your leadership profile is, at or outside of work. If you manage no one (directly or indirectly) and your extracurricular leadership consists of tutoring people (rather than say coordinating other tutors) then your leadership profile may not be as strong as you need it to be. If you get a 700 GMAT your numbers will be fine for these three schools. But given the leadership question, I would consider even UCLA and NYU's part-time programs to be "reaches" for you. You should be competitive at USC.

Hope this helps.

I appreciate the feedback. Does leadership always have to mean being the "boss" or managing someone else? I know that's the conventional definition of leadership, but is that the definition of leadership B-Schools are always thinking about? I know of so many people who went onto B-School before they ever were boss or managed other people. I absolutely agree with you that managing other people is no question a form of leadership, but it's only 1 form.

chicago2la,

If you know of "so many people" who got into top-ranked B-schools without any formal or informal experience coordinating or directing people, then, congratulations, your B-school worries are over. Yes of course leadership takes many different forms; whatever form *yours* takes, emphasize it. In the meantime, I'll go on recommending that applicants get as much traditional leadership experience as they can.
