Need perspective on prep strategy??? [#permalink]
16 Oct 2007, 02:39
Hi,
Need some quick inputs from you guys!
Got 16days to go for my test, i'm using follwing material for my prep:
Primarily relying on:
OG11th E
OG10th E
SETs
GMATCLUB.com & clubbers
--------------------
On, GMATTER (secondary practice materials)
- OG 10th looks good on computer screen!
- 1000 CRs/SC/RCs - I'm not sure whther i'll b able to comlete all this
-------------------
CATs (primary)
- GMAT Prep - retakes
- Powerprep CATs - retakes
-------------------
Secondary CATs
- MGMAT CATs - only to get additional practice on QUANT
-------------------
Now couple of questions:
How reliable are 1000CRs???
How reliable are 1000SCs???
If i say reliable then i mean to which extent are they representation of real GMAT? - as we all know that none of the materials available in the market are quite close to the real thing! So dont wanna waste my time on any of the crappy materials!
I would take RCs anyways....
Thanks for your inputs!!!

I can't answer your question on the 1000 materials because I haven't used those, although I've read good things about them in the forum.
But I would recommend against using the OG10; it overlaps too much with OG11. Just use OG11. OG10 is so outdated. You have more than enough materials to prep with, so put that one aside.
I also would focus on doing new tests, not retakes. With retakes, you WILL see repeat questions. And again, the old GMAT test, Powerprep, is too old to be an accurate reflection of what you'll see. It was retired almost two years ago.
I have read here that the Manhattan GMAT tests are very hard, esp for quant, so if you do those, don't let them scare you. Just go in knowing they're tough.
I would add the tests from Cracking the GMAT if you can pick them up. They're closer to the real thing than the other non-official tests.

I did a lot of the 1000SCs and some of the 1000CRs. I'd say they are pretty much on point. At least as much as they can be compared with other test prep material. I did save them as a last resort until I exhausted all of the other practice material I had.

Looks good.
I personally don't like the 1000 CR's. 1000 SC's are good. 1000 RC's are ok practice, but have many bugs. (also when it says to refer to line X, its kinda hard to know where to refer to!) But again good practice.
Sets, i havent done these. Ive been told that these contain many errors, so I decided to stay away from them unless I exhaust everything else.

Good study guide Amit.
Try to get the old GMAT Paper Tests too (there are 9, its good practise).
The SC is OK (good enough to practise off of), the CR is terrible, I would avoid it 100% (to give you an idea I get >1/2 wrong on 1000CR but get 95%+ correct on OG, GMATPrep, etc). The way they formulate the questions is terrible.
You should start doing intermixed problem sets and timing yourself, aiming to increase your accuracy and decrease your time per question. You will find that as your accuracy increases and time decreases, the GMAT Paper Tests and the GMATPreps will seem simpler and simpler... and your score will get better and better!
I went from about 620 to 700-720 (2 months), then from 700-720 to 750 in about 5 weeks, and the last 6 weeks I've gone from 750 to 790 steady on GMATPrep & Paper
You can do it!!!

Nice improvement, StartupAddict!
I would caution you on using your paper tests as a gauge for your score, because they're not adaptive. They're still good for practice, but don't pay much attention to those scores. GMATPrep, on the other hand, is a great indicator, as long as you're not retaking those tests. That will skew your practice scores as well.

Where can I find these GMAT paper tests/sets? Please advice.

I read somewhere that someone had a pdf that was able to share, but I don't know if it's the same thing (I doubt it) and I can't find the thread anymore. Does someone know anything about this?

I think this series should not be used early in the prep..... Once you are hitting 650+ , you know the basics......you may start taking these problems. One more big problem with 1000 series is that , you don't have the explanations handy.......you will have to look around / post / discuss(which is good).......and is time consuming sometimes.....
