Hello,
I am going into my Junior year at a State school in MA carrying a 3.7. I am going to do a five-year plan where I will get my Bachelor's Degree (Honors-not sure if that makes a difference) and my Master's of Science in Management. My question is about what I should do next. I have thought of going into Doctorate school but since I am not going to be a professor, most have said that getting a Ph.D is a waste of time. I have also heard that getting an MBA along with an MSM is useless. I would like to have a degree from a school with a stronger reputation than a State school because I feel that I will have a better chance in the real world, any truth to that assumption? Any advice? Thanks!

You've mentioned everything except for the possibilty of going out and getting a job right now. If you move forward with an MSM right now and later pick up an MBA, you may end up wasting a year, real cash and opportunity cost. So, you may want to think about that a bit more.

Certainly the better the school you attend, the more access to opportunities you will have. I attended a State school for undergrad and I was blown away by the opportunities that my classmates in b-school who attended "brand name" undergrads had that I missed out on.

Just something to think about.

I think the emphasis on the source of funding is misplaced -the public elite schools (Berkeley, Virginia, UCLA, Michigan) are "state" schools but they provide programs that are of similar or superior quality to those of many private elite schools. Thus, I would place less stress on some perceived private/public dichotomy than the opportunties presented by each school.

There are certainly some underfunded public schools, but there are also many underfunded private ones.
