Need Suggestions for my GMAT prep [#permalink]
23 Nov 2009, 21:35
Hi All, I have my GMAT exam on 10th December.I have covered the following books and topics: 1. Manhattan Numbers, Properties Book 2. Manhattan Reading Comprehension3. Manhattan Critical Reasoning 4. Powerscore Critical Reasoning5. Manhattan Word TranslationsI am currently solving the questions in the Official Guides. I had given a test last week from Manhattan and got a score of 610, Kaplan online practice test: 630. Today, I gave the GMAT Prep test and got a score of 590. I am really disappointed. I got 23/37 questions in Quant correct and 23/41 questions in Verbal correct. I realize I need to improve on Data Sufficiency and Reading Comprehension. I would really appreciate your suggestions and help. Thanks!

@Gmatter111: Manhattan IMO is one of the most useful tests as it gives a very very detailed view of the results..When you took the Mgmat CAT last week did you spend enough time reviewing it?Did the results correlate with the realization that you need to improve in DS and RC?? The number of questions you got right/wrong is not relevant..you should pay more attention as to WHERE and WHY you are going wrong. Also,I would suggest that for CR you use only ONE book(either manhattan or powerscore..your choice)Stick to one and go through it throughly. Let me know if you have any specific question! All the best!

Thanks tejal111. From the Manhattan test, I figured that I need to work on DS,PS,CR and RC. Right now I need to be stronger on DS.
Does anyone have any recommendations on how to be stronger in DS?
Thanks for your responses.

Thanks for your responses. Hello Gmatter111, DS and PS are very similar. Both involve taking a problem and breaking it down to figure out what the question is "really" asking. The main difference is with PS you WILL solve the problem. With DS you only need to know if you CAN answer the question. Regardless of HOW it is answered (yes you can solve or no you can not), can you answer it DEFINITIVELY. Thus, you do NOT need to answer the question, you just need to know if you CAN answer the question. Let us know if you have any other questions. mohater

Thanks mohater.
Since we know that the problems in PS can be solved, I find it easier to solve it and can compare with the answers mentioned in the choices.
The issue with DS is that for many questions, I can not pin point whether only the first or second statement is sufficient, both are required or neither.
Can you please recommend where I can practice DS from? I have completed the OG already.

We have the GMATClub testsBy purchasing the MGMAT books, you should have access to MGMAT tests and question banks. The MGMAT DS book is also fairly helpful with the material needed to succeed on DS problems. Finally, we have the DS section of the GC site. Every now and then, one of the mods posts some difficult questions to answer: gmat-data-sufficiency-ds-141/Based on what you posted above, sounds like you don't know how to approach the DS problems. I suggest going with a book or going through the DS forum to understand *how* to solve DS problems. Simply doing practice problems will NOT resolve this.

Which book do you recommend me to pick up to improve my DS concepts and to determine the right approach for solving DS questions?

I've only used GMATClub and the MGMAT ( Manhattan GMAT) books. I found the Manhattan GMAT DS book very useful. For a review of quant books, please visit: best-gmat-math-prep-books-reviews-recommendations-77291.htmlWe have a wiki article on DS: http://gmatclub.com/wiki/Data_sufficiency

I had a similar problem!PS sounds manageable while DS is...!(sigh)And to top it off the OG DS questions are manageable while in the tests you completly screw it up.. Here's what I did: Pick up topics for each day and solve around 25 questions with indepth reviewing...where do you find the questions from??By using the "tag" function of this forum!!It helped me immensely so you should try it out.. Note: OG12 DS is comparitively tougher than OG11..IMO HTH
