Re: Never before had the e-business industry faced as many [#permalink]
E it is...

past perfect ->past

the stem says....never before....which sould be in past perfect cos the latter half is being compared with the late 1990's which should be simple past

D gets rid of "they". who are they? should at least be "it", if it refers to the industry

Pick D.Who is they?All the answers except for D contain "they".
D doesn't seem correct either because of improper use of "as"

IMO it cannot be D) because "as" introduces a clause that needs a subject and a verb. so D) is definitely out.

that was where I fell into the trap too. I guess use of they is valid here. They refers to the only noun in the sentence (e-business Industry), so from a pronoun reference perspective there are no issues.
Also, e-business Industry can be considered as plural to mean all the industries doing e-business.
