A. so many carrots at once as it had in

B. at once as many carrots as

C. so many carrots at once as that it had gardened in

D. as many carrots at once as it did in

E. so many carrots at once as it did in

Clear winner is D....

as many as is the correct idiom.... which anyway cancels out A,C,E....

B is wrong... as at once should not come before the carrots......!

A. so many carrots at once as it had in
as many X as Y - is the correct idiom

B. at once as many carrots as
Incorrect comparision. Compres carrots with fall

C. so many carrots at once as that it had gardened in
Incorrect idiom. The correct idiom is - as many X as Y. Also, the use of "it had" is incorrect. The correct usage is "it did". Did means performing some action which is the correct usage here

D. as many carrots at once as it did in
CORRECT - Correct idiom - as many X as Y.

E. so many carrots at once as it did in
as many X as Y - is the correct idiom

Hi All,

"At once" is here just a modifier (Adverb) here, so we can remove it.
Never before had the gardening crew harvested so many carrots [strike]at once[/strike] as it had in the fall of 2006.

Here both sentence are in the same tense but we know author is comparing carrots in 2006 to ever before, so 2006 is later in time and we need to use simple past for that.
So option A and C is gone.

For B . as many carrots as fall of 2006 . Wrong comparison so out.

Between D and E, definitely D is correct because idiom is "as many as"

Hi Jatinrai,
I believe now it should be clear that why usage of had is wrong. If any question please revert.

I hope my explanation will help. If indeed, please give me kudos.

Question is about 'So many' vs 'as many... as'
'So many' --> wrong. Eliminate A, C, and E
B is structurally wrong --> eliminate

the sentence says "Never before". using as many as ... in 2006, doesn't make sense w/ never before. Other than idiom any reason why E is wrong?

I went with D for two reasons
1. Idiom - as many X as Y
2. "had harvested before" and "did (harvest) in 2006" are parallel.

as many carrots at once as it did in ; this option correctly uses as many carrots....as it did sounds good. Moreover "So many" is incorrect in other sentences. Use of 'had' i also incorrect in other sentences.

I think there's much more to it than just idiom (between D and E). What's the source? Do you have any official explanation as well?

It's D. And I don't think it's a 700-level question, cos those usually knock the wind outta you!

In D, had harvested doesn’t seem to be parallel to it did
Why not A? I think so many as is the correct idiom along with as many as..also, had harvested is parallel to it had

I think this question is flawed. A has a problem of idioms, while D doesn't preserve the past perfect tense of "had harvested", the tense is changed to past simple "as it DID in.."

When using helping verbs, the first instance of the verb should match the helping verb in tense, as per MGMAT.

The correct answer should have been "as many carrots at once as it had in".
