New Member: UPDATED w/ Study Plan (feedback needed) [#permalink]

Hi everyone, Stumbled across this site after doing random internet searches I figured I might as well join since I'm a member of 15 other forums and started my GMAT studying journey... This is actually my second stint studying for the GMAT. The first was back in April 2009. I had registered for an MGMAT 9-course session, which my company at the time paid for. My original test date was scheduled for July, but when July came around, I figured to push it out a month because I was scoring mid-500s on my CATs. Target score is 710-730. Before my test in August, I received an offer from a Big 4 consulting firm in which I could not turn down. I never took the exam, and here I am all over again studying for the exam with plans to matriculate in Fall '12. If you haven't already guessed, consulting was not the right career choice So I am on the road to hopefully getting the score that I want and attend the school of my choice, but I know there is a lot of work ahead of me. I am committed, devoted, focused to achieve my desired score. With that said, I have scheduled a test date of 8/26. Currently, I am following the MGMAT Study Organizer which is an Excel spreadsheet devoting daily practice on different GMAT topics. The amount of work ranges between 2-3 hours a day, and I have currently set this organizer as my guide to achieve a 720+. I would appreciate any feedback from those who have used this sheet or any other method to achieve the scores they want. My options are limited and I HAVE to score a 720+ to stay competitive within my applicant pool at the schools where I plan to apply. Thanks in advance, T5G

Thanks, bb. Took my MGMAT CAT back on Friday and scored 530, 33Q 31V so I have A LOT of work to do! Based on my assessment report, how should I tackle the areas needed for improvement? Here is my split: %Right Data Sufficiency 27% (always weak area of mine. Really undermined questions and zipped through quant with 9 min left. I know I have a problem when I have 9 min left in quant!) Critical Reasoning 29% (wasn't familiar with interpreting the questions and it made things difficult) Number Properties 50% (Difficult to grasp especially at the 600-800 level, but I can get through this) Reading Comp 58% (Took exam after the end of a long work day, and did better than expected for my first shot. I'm a native speaker and wont have much trouble to improve verbal to overall hit the low 40s) Sentence Correction 73% (this is without much review in Sentence correction area) I reviewed all of my quant questions from the CAT, but I want to focus on one topic at a time. I've also read the study guide threads but a little overwhelmed on how to tackle this. Any additional input or links to threads would be great. Also, can you please update the first post in the Error Log thread to reflect the latest and greatest error logs? It makes it difficult navigating through all 10 pages to find the most updated one. If you can make it a sticky, that would be great. Thanks!

All, any feedback would be GREATLY appreciated.
So, the past 3 weeks have been extremely intense. I have been averaging in the ballpark of 20-25 hrs/week, since May 31. I'm approaching my 4 week mark this Saturday and will be taking my 2nd MGMAT CAT, but thinking of actually doing a GmatPREP (for more realistic score) Any thoughts on that?
In the past 3 weeks, I've been able to cover ALL of the MGMAT Quant strategy guides, gone through 300 quant questions. It might not seem like much, but only intensified problem solving after I got through the guides about 10 days ago. I also did about 5 days of verbal in between (SC and CR). After completing the problem solving in blocks of 20-25 questions, I conduct a thorough review of both right AND wrong answers. All of my right / wrong answers are highlighted in a sheet. I mark the wrong answers on a 1,2, or 3 scale of difficulty. 1 being extremely easy / careless mistake / etc.. and 3 being the most difficult (unfamiliar with concept, didnt know where to start, etc...too much time for an Excel spreadsheet IMO) MGMAT actually provided a list of all the OG problems and Quant & Verbal 2nd Ed Review problems, and categorized them to their corresponding sections (Number Properties, Word Translation, Geometry, etc...)
I have 2 more days left before my second CAT. A few questions:
1. Should I continue with quant until I have it down, before moving to verbal? Or should I switch over to Verbal next month? 2. Recommendations on having the timer on right now or turned off?
Exam date is scheduled for August 26. Any advice / feedback would be appreciated. Again, trying to shoot for ~750s
Thanks, T5G

If you're still midway through your studying I would recommend doing the MGMAT CAT rather than the GMATPrep one. I'd save GMATPrep until the end because it will give you the best feeling for what the exam is like right before you take it. Also, MGMAT is easier to review given their detailed explanations and diagnostic tools. Overall your scores between the two exams shouldn't be too different. You're just trying to ballpark right now anyway. I'm of the opinion that once you have a decent foundation in both Quant and Verbal, you should be studying both simultaneously. GMAT skills get rusty and the key is to keep drilling them. Something else you should be doing if you aren't already is keeping a list of questions you got wrong/took too long on and redo them periodically. Good luck!

Quote: Something else you should be doing if you aren't already is keeping a list of questions you got wrong/took too long on and redo them periodically I have my own version of an Error log. All my questions are normally within alotted time, except if theyre really hard. By that time, I wouldve decided if I want to just take an educated guess and move on.

You're never going to properly replicate the test experience without taking AWA's, so if time isn't an issue I would do them whenever you take a full CAT. If time is pressing though you might do an AWA every couple CATs just to keep those skills fresh.
