New to the forum..need help on re-taking the test!!!!!!! [#permalink] New post 10 Aug 2012, 11:13
Hi All,

I have already given my GMAT and was not satisfied with the score and hence am planning to take it again.
I gave a gap of almost 5 months before i started to study again. This is what i am doing now:

--I have majorly been practicing CR and SC from the GMAT forums they have new questions which i badly need and have done the math part of the OG 12
--Practicing SC and geometry from MGMAT material as I figured out these to be my weak areas.
--Taking tests weekly which do show steady improvement.

However, I have certain queries on which i sincerely need advice from you guys

--Firstly, do i purchase OG 13 ??? ( will it help me in any way barring the IR part)
--What i also wanted to know is that is the new version of the GMAT prep available?? and if yes does it contain completely new questions or will they overlap with the previous versions.
-- what would the other good sources for decent practice tests as i have already given MGMAT tests previously and am looking for some other quality tests.

I know the post is too long and will require time for you to respond to, but do let me know if you guys can help me in any of the above areas with valuable advice.

Aiming to nail it this time..

Regards,
Mohit

Hi, there. I'm happy to share my 2 cents on these questions. :-)

First of all, concerning whether or not to get the OG13, you may find this post quite helpful:
breakdown-of-official-guide-13th-edition-vs-12th-edition-133151.html

Also, concerning GMAC's IR website, here's a blog summarizing the 50 IR questions on that site.
http://magoosh.com/gmat/2012/gmacs-offi ... -new-gmat/

As for the new GMAT prep --- all I can say is: GMAC is always recycling questions. Yes, there are new ones, but they are certainly not all new.

I'd like to recommend Magoosh
1) We have hundreds and hundred of practice questions online
2) We have study plans you may find helpful to follow:
http://magoosh.com/gmat/2012/3-month-gm ... h-focused/
3) We have a score guarantee that you will improve over your previous official GMAT.

Here's a free practice question in coordinate geometry:
http://gmat.magoosh.com/questions/819
Here's a free practice SC question.
http://gmat.magoosh.com/questions/1093
For each of those, when you submit your answer, the following page will have a full video explanation. Each one of our 800+ practice GMAT questions has its own video explanation.

I hope all this helps. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Mike :-)

No need if you have OG 12. If you are in need of additional practice material, check out GMATPrep pack1 - it has got 400 new questions whereas OG13 has less than that. For IR you need to know what type of questions are asked. Sample problems available in mba.com are suffice. You can spend the last two days before your test day for IR, till then you need not bother about IR.

New version is available, but as said by above expert not all are new questions.

Next to MGMAT, veritas, kaplan and knewton are all at same level. You can go for any one of them.

GMAT prep is the free software provided by mba.com for anyone who has registered for the test. What I mentioned is GMAT Prep Question pack 1. See the details in the below link.

http://www.mba.com/store/product-info.a ... uctID=5025

Use this if you have exhausted all the resources, OG 12 is suffice and you can repeat the problems any number of times. I am going for a retake and still using the OG, haven't bought the question pack yet. Even if you know the right answer, try to find all the errors in wrong options for SC/different methods to solve a single PS/DS problem - there are always better methods. Search in forums or post questions and learn from them. For RC and CR - you don't need to solve them again and again. Make sure you have some general rules to approach each question type. The rules should be something like general prephrasing to what you are expecting from the answer choice. You shouldn't group any answer choice, but you should know what type of right answer to expect. Say for weaken questions it should break down the conclusion, for RC inference question the answer choice will be a direct restatement from the passage something like that. Don't delve too much into the details of each question type as given in power score CR such as shell game answers/opposite answers etc - this is very detrimental as there are innumerable possibilities of right answer choices and you cannot find a group for every wrong answer, instead you should focus on what a generic pattern of right answers as said above. So once you get the right strategy, practice few times and get used to the pattern or strategy, then you don't need to work on regularly. New resources would be useful only if you are still learning.
