nights/weekend company moonlighting possible [#permalink] New post 07 Jan 2013, 23:49
I see many stories on the forum here about people founding a startup or being on board of a nonprofit while working fulltime.

Since most fulltime employers have policies against or regarding disclosure of moonlighting, makes me wonder if it's so easy to moonlight. One, even without conflict of interest disclosing that you are setting up your own company is a strike against your promotion within your fullltime employer. Second, without disclosure there is always possibility of such information being in public domain.

I want to know
a) do usual moonlighting restrictions for disclosure apply even when working for a nonprofit (no pay)
b) if there is no conflict of interest, then did you disclose your side-job to your company

thank you.

Many employers encourage their employees to volunteer with non profits (I am actually forced to do that by my employer :-))
You can always list it on your resume as "Community Service"... i think it is admirable rather than punishable....

On the other hand, moonlighting, and working for pay a second job could be an indicator that you are looking for more opportunities and more challenge. I think that is also a good message to your company/boss. If they can't offer, you are willing to go elsewhere...
