No score improvement [#permalink] New post 18 Dec 2013, 06:07
Hi

It's been 1 month that I have started with GMAT prep and have taken two practice tests. 1 from GMAT prep and other one from Kaplan. I took GMAT prep before I started with my prep and scored 530 and in the Kaplan practice test I scored 540. There wasn't much change in my score. I seek help regarding how to goa bout the preparations. As I am devoting good amount of time everyday but I am not getting any result.

I have completed OG 13 and OG 12
Kaplan Math Workbook
CR power score bible (in process)

Which else book do you recommend and please suggest how to prepare as I need to cross 700. Also, my verbal is very weak especially critical reasoning.

Any helpful suggestions are welcome!

Thanks in advance

Hello Vidhi1

I would definitely recommend that you check out Economist GMAT Tutor (http://gmat.economist.com) and sign up for a free trial. Our course uses online adaptive learning technology so you won't spend time on topics you have already mastered. You can utilize your study time to focus only on the areas that still need improvement. Plus, you'll get one-on-one learning sessions via Skype with our expert tutors.

Check it out and let me know what you think!

Thank you,

Elizabeth

A score of 530 means your basics are not strong. OGs will not help you in that since they don't have much theory. OGs are typically used for practice after going through the entire material of a good test prep company.
My suggestion would be to either get the entire study material of some a good test prep company and go through it if you are planning on self study. Else, you can join a classroom course if that's how you study best. (Check out our GMAT prep products here: http://www.veritasprep.com/gmat/)
Once you are conceptually strong, you will definitely see improvement in your score. Also, I can vouch for the Veritas CR book. It discusses all CR question types and after you thoroughly understand them, CR becomes quite mathematical.

I echo the comments above. You need to understand the concepts that are tested on the GMAT and OG work alone probably won't be enough.

I recommend that you work through a full prep course if you want to maximize your score. Do some research on the top companies to see what works best for you (tutoring, in-person classes, online classes, self-study programs). Most companies have free resources for you to take a "test-drive". Realize that you will need to make a significant investment in both time and money.
