Non-accounting undergrad seeking appropriate Macc Program [#permalink] New post 25 Aug 2010, 07:07
Hello all,

Here is my situation: I received an English degree as an undergrad and now I would like to pursue accounting.

I have no math courses under my belt, but I've been studying diligently for the GMAT. My program search is geographic specific to Baltimore and Boston, since I'm moving to one or the other in the spring.

The programs I've found claim to be "tailored to those without a BS in Accounting". They are typically 12-15 months long. One is Northeastern, another is Loyola, and another is U Maryland.

Can these type of programs actually prepare me for the rigors of accounting?
Is it possible for someone in my shoes to become an accountant without obtaining a second bachelors?

Thanks for any advice!

Cheers.

Most accredited MAcc or MSA programs should help you prepare for accounting. Typically, if you have non business undergrad major, you will have to take additional business courses to finish the program.

Target potential schools based on its reputation on recruiting. For example in Boston area, Boston College and Bentley offers pretty good programs.

Look through the schools in the top tier of the ranking to get an idea.

Also, don't get confused with the program's undergraduate reputation and its graduate reputation. The two are completely different for some schools.

In short, the answer is no. They will not sufficiently prepare you, but they will help you get a job in public accounting if that is what you want. A lot of accounting knowledge is attained on the job, so to speak. These classes just scratch the surface. The CPA exam will go into a little more depth than what these classes will, but the work you do with a firm, will be much more in depth than even the CPA exam. Just focus on getting into a school, and then interviewing with the firms that you want to work for. The Big 4 have pretty good training programs that should help as well. Hope this helps.
