Hi maidinindya:
Coakleym pretty much hit the nail on the head. You are great on paper, so is really to come down to how well you define your short and longer term goals.
At a high-level, defining actionable short-term goals and strategic long-term goals really tell an admissions committee if you understand your fit with their program. If you are mentioning Harvard and Stanford in the same sentence, you have to realize that these are remarkably different schools. In fact, I consider the schools at polar opposite ends of the spectrum. HBS is all about the leadership. They want to know that you've been a leader among peers at every stage of the game. They are not as interested in, perhaps, the intangibles you bring to the table. Your message and your TFA experiences would bode better at a Stanford or even a Yale. in my opinion detail is very much a hybrid between Harvard and Stanford. Other schools to consider would be Dartmouth, Berkeley, Kellogg and even Anderson. Not-For-Profit experiences and your commitment to affecting a community would play very well with these respective admissions committees.
The one thing that you are going to want to stress throughout your academic and professional careers as well as your philanthropic activities is your leadership. You have to have a good understanding the types of leadership that the programs I listed above are looking for. It's not as simple as being in charge of other teachers. It's more in the philosophy you exercise to employer leadership. At a high-level appropriate type of leadership is team oriented and collaborative. It is a type of leadership that creates opportunities for others to succeed in their own rite. This does not just mean your fellow teachers. This type of leadership would involve examples regarding your students or perhaps a few reluctant parents.
I hope this helps. If you would like to set up a complementary one-hour consultation to discuss your background further, please p.m. me.
Respectfully,
Paul Lanzillotti
