None of my friends have been OR None of my friends has been [#permalink] New post 13 Mar 2008, 21:02
As of this morning, none of my friends have been able to solve the puzzle contained in last weeks paper.

(A) none of my friends have been able to solve
(B) none of my friends has been able to solve

According to Manhattan SC text, 'none' is a subject for which the 'verb' depends on the 'of' construction. Kaplan says that the correct answer is B but according to Manhattan the answer should be A.

Any thoughts?

none of plural - singular:

SC1000:
536.None of the attempts to specify the causes of crime explains why most of the people exposed to the alleged causes do not commit crimes and, conversely, why so many of those not so exposed do.

765.The herbicide Oryzalin was still being produced in 1979, three years after the wives of workers producing the chemical in Rensselaer, New York, were found either to have had miscarriages or to have borne children with heart defects; none of the pregnancies was normal.

On the other hand, I've found in OG11:
none of plural - plural:
RC. page 382, line (29-30): However, none of these high-technology methods are of any value......
CR. page 503, CR#121: D) None of Northen Air's competitors that use Belleville Airport are considering buying Skybuses.

In addition, I've found many singular and plural cases in CR1000.

You've done your homework.
I guess I would stick with:
None of plural - plural

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

I go for B

As of this morning, none of my friends have been able to solve the puzzle contained in last weeks paper.

(A) none of my friends have been able to solve
(B) none of my friends has been able to solve

In this scenario, even if one friend solves the puzzle the it would change the answer to one of my friends has solved the puzzle.

As the result of the statement is determined by "singular" (one friend) it has to be be B

if it is a composite event, that requires more than one individual to complete the event, then it would be plural.

none of plural + singular verb
none of plural that + plural verb + singular verb

Does anybody have an example of "none of" usage in OG SC or paper tests?

:( I checked OG10 - none of SC problems does/do not test "none of" usage. Maybe GMAC avoids "none of"?
