Nonprofit Experience---Am I doomed? [#permalink] New post 21 Sep 2012, 09:51
So I have been working at a nonprofit organization since graduation. I was excited to jump in to help the education system by working in one of our nations most underserved public schools. I have been involved with a national nonprofit organization in doing so, however, I am now getting anxious that maybe my experience won't appear as quantative as my fellow applicants at Goldman or McKinsey. Will I even be seen as a legitimate candidate? I want to go to a top program, but am scared! Have I doomed my chances by choosing a career in saving the world?

On the contrary! B-schools are increasingly giving importance to the non-profit sector, as well as to CSR. You will bring a very valuable perspective which will be very different from what a Goldman guy will bring in. And if you llok at the class stats of the top b-schools you will notice they take in people with Humanities background (if this is what you have).

What will really matter is: whether you took up some real responsibilities and made a positive impact on the people you were working with. You will also need to articulate clear career goals and the need for an MBA to fulfill these goals.

Doomed?!!?!?! Why doomed? You are BLESSED!!!

B-Schools LOVE Folks with real deep non-profit experience. Juuuuust be sure to try and include it in your goals. (i.e. I want to specialize in Strategy consulting for Nonprofits) And voila!
