Original inverted text.
Quote:
Not since Galileo suffered the “scurvy humor” of the Inquisition has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue a theory.
The mark of inversion could be seen in the verb 'has' preceding the subject 'a religious organization'.
Rewrite
Since Galileo suffered the “scurvy humor” of the Inquisition, a religious organization has not
so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue a theory.
'Since' is an adverb here marking the time of 'when" and not a conjunction meaning 'because'.
'So' is often used as an adverb of manner as in 'how did she sing? So did she sing. Many times, it is also an intensifier meaning a huge quantum as in "how effectively?" - so effectively.
Between A and C
A. has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue
C) has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist to pursue
C is short and straight .
Wouldn't C mean that it is the religious organisation that wants to pursue something?
For eg. : Why did the religious organisation curb the ability of a major scientist?
To pursue....blah.
A seems more clear than C in this respect.
Please help. Thanks.
