I see that you are applying to both PHD and MBA programs at Chicago, HBS, UMich and Wharton. Isn't the PHD and MBA degrees offered through the business school (for some of these schools)? If so, wouldn't the same committee that reviews your MBA application, end up reviewing your PHD application as well? They might say that your goals (presented in your MBA and PHD essays) might contradict one another? It might be okay at some schools but I would check to see if this is a no-no as a pre-caution.

Good point. Even before the actual application, that begs the question -- what do you really want to do? A PHD is very different from an MBA; if you answer "I'll do anything" do that question, it's actually going to be a huge negative from a PHD standpoint.

Thanks for the feedback.

This isn't a "I'll do anything", rather "doing better on the GMAT has potentially opened more opportunities". At first I was only considering PhD programs, but now that I broke 700, I see potential in both programs.

I spoke to an alum from U Chicago (MBA) and he mentioned that admission committees for the respective programs are mutually exclusive.

That being said, I don't think (as far as I've given thought) that my goals between the programs would diverge. The outcome would hopefully be in the same direction. The MBA would be a more business oriented approach, while the PhD would be more governance/academic.

I'm sure you do; however when writing the SOP you pretty much need to take the "I need to do this or I'll die" approach (without getting too corny), which sometimes implies using mutually exclusive arguments, even though nobody's going to read both applications.

That said I'm not sure what you mean by "at first I was only considering PhD programs, but now that I broke 700, I see potential in both" -- average GMAT scores are usually much higher for the PhD than the MBA, especially for fields like Finance, Accounting and Operations Management. For example (I knew I could get that info so my choice of school is not entirely random), at the University of Rochester the average GMAT score for the incoming MBA class is 675, but it's 718 for the PhD program. MBA GMAT scores are higher at the top MBA schools such as Chicago, Wharton and Stanford but PhD GMAT scores are very likely higher than 718 there as well.

Thanks again for the expanded feedback.

I'm going to sleep on that some more. I might just stick to a few of MBA programs (Wharton, HBS, Michigan) and then focus the rest on PhD apps, only over lapping on Michigan with both apps (PhD: UT Austin, Chicago, MSU, Michigan, Washington).
