(B) merging the nuclei of atoms instead of splitting them apart, like nuclear reactors

Go with C on this one
A) use of and is inappropriate as we want to make clear the contrast between the action of merging and splitting
B) seems as if nuclear reactors are splitted apart as well
D) them refers to atoms or the Sun, the stars, and hydrogen bombs?
E) again, them has no clear referal

I've got this question form another site, so I don't know the quality of the
question. Nevertheless, it is a interesting question.
Anyone want to reconsruct the answer choice C with the
question stem and see what is means?
I had choosen C first. But, now I've changed my mind.

Hell no and hell no
C cannot be. I would have chosen C in the test though. It has to be E here.
What does C say
Nuclear fusion is the force that powers the Sun, the stars, and hydrogen bombs, merging the nuclei of atoms rather than splitting them apart, as nuclear reactors do
It appears as if Nuclear fusion does something that happens in nuclear reacors. But that is not what the sentence is saying. The sentence is trying to bring out the contrast between what Nuclear fusion ( a force ) does and what happens in Nuclear reactors.
E looks as if it is comparing Nuclear reactors to Nuclear fusion. This is OK from grammatical point of view because both are nouns. The person is not supposed to know anything about Nuclear fusion or the Nuclear reactor. Some grammatical expert at Timbuktoo will choose E over C.
E is the most clear sentence.

It is C - I don't think it is correct to coordinate merging with powers - merging should be subordinate.
We can rearrange C as follows to see why it is correct:
Nuclear fusion, <merging the nuclei of atoms rather than splitting them apart, as nuclear reactors do>, is the force that powers the Sun.

I'm happy to see that you are taking the time to examine all the choices. It's a bitch sometimes to articulate them all, but the exercise will pay big benefits i promise!

If we base the selection on general knowledge, Anand correctly nailed the question.
The answer should be E.
But, somewhere IтАЩve read that one should not change the intended meaning
of the question stem. If so, then this question is ambiguous.
Akamai: Could you confirm this assumption?
