Nuclear fusion is the force that powers the Sun, the
stars, and hydrogen bombs, merging the nuclei of atoms and not splitting them apart, as in nuclear reactors.
(A) merging the nuclei of atoms and not splitting
them apart, as in nuclear reactors
(B) merging the nuclei of atoms instead of splitting
them apart, like nuclear reactors
(C) merging the nuclei of atoms rather than split-
ting them apart, as nuclear reactors do
(D) and merges the nuclei of atoms but does not
split them apart, as is done in unclear reactors
(E) and merges the nuclei of atoms, unlike atomic
reactors that split them apart.
A - just wrong
B - incomparable (splitting, nuclear reactors)
C - similar but better than B because it end with "do"
D - what the hell is "unclear" reactors??? unnecessarily wordy
E - them has ambiguous reference
I do not have acceess to explanation to this question. However, the only explanation I can think of is that only D and E start with 'and merges' , which is consistent with 'powers the Sun, the stars, and hydrogen bombs'
You can eliminate D because 'as is done' sounds awkward
I'm betting that E is defintely not the answer. If anyone
proves me wrong, you will receive a bottle of wine*.
Main Clause: Nuclear fusion is the force that powers the Sun, the stars, and hydrogen bombs,
Subordinate clasuse: (and) merges the nuclei of atoms,
Prepositional phrase+Adjective clause: unlike atomic reactors (that split them apart).
Issue 1: Subordinate clause does not have Subject.
Issue 2: "Them" does not have clear referrent.
Let me explain the problem with the popular answer C.
The sentence brings out a contrast saying the fusion merges the two nuclei instead of splitting them apart. If this sentence is followed by as nuclear reactors do then it can mean either "nuclear reactors also merge the nuclei" or "nuclear reactors spli the nuclei apart"
C does not convey what nuclear reactors actually do. E definitely does by adding "unlike".
