shadowsjc wrote: ok next friday 3/12 sounds like the date for the first one. the location seems to be torn between downtown and midtown. prerequisites for the place should be: not too expensive not super loud (hopefully) near public transportation i saw a few hotel bars mentioned earlier. do you think they have happy hour specials? i'm of the type who prefers to spend <$10 a drink if possible. i just searched through yelp (yelp.com) for a few possible bars near midtown. here's what i came up with: Jack demsey's: http://www.yelp.com/biz/jack-demseys-new-yorkblarney stone: http://www.yelp.com/biz/blarney-stone-new-york-3Stout: http://www.yelp.com/biz/stout-nyc-new-yorki've never been to any of these, so i'm just basing it off proximity to 33rd st / penn, as well as a few reviews. feel free to throw in any other votes for this (midtown) or any other nyc location. Good suggestions. I've been to all three of those and think Stout has the best atmosphere but they're all fun. But I also think Dove down by NYU is a rock solid choice if people would prefer to meet in that area.

I'm in as well! I work downtown so that would be good, but I can easily come to midtwon as well.

Why not shoot for the Thurs so Solly doesn't get all upset. I would not dare step in Blarney Stone, and my friend who lives right near that daren't either.

@3underscore: it sounded like more people would prefer it on friday. i'd definitely be down for doing part 2 a week or so later so we could meet up with solaris and any other current students, though. @ everyone - anyone else prefer downtown or midtown?

Do a Friday thing in Midtown and a Thursday thing downtown? Next Friday and two Thursdays from now, possibly? Just suggesting. No preference personally.

Oh that's alright, we can try to do another thing a few weeks later and rope in fatb and ninky, as well.
And Blarney Stone is a horrifically bad recommendation. If you want to stay Midtown in the 30's, you may as well go to Ginger Man, its sister bar Under the Volcano across the street, or that other sparkly faux Irish place next to the Ginger Man.

Hi all,
I just joined and saw the posts about meeting up in NYC. Can someone confirm the details for me? Are some folks meeting tonight? (and I agree the Blarney Stone is not a good suggestion.)
Best, MilaEm

meeting will take place next friday 3/12. location TBA (but don't worry, not blarney stone). most likely stout, or a location downtown instead if demand warrants it.

when i was in houston the gingerman was one of my favorite spots to grab a beer. they probably had 100 differnt beers on tap there. when i heard there was a gingerman in NYC i've been wanting to check it out. so i'd be interested in meeting there, unless yall htink it'll be too loud/crowded for happy hour.

It's definitely great but any time before 7:30PM, it actually can get so packed that you literally cannot move. Others will corroborate. I'd still be down to go because of the beer selection but there would very likely be no sitting involved until later in the night.

that brings up another question - what time are we going to do this? obviously we don't all have to show up at the same time, but what would be a good rough start time? 6 pm?

Place is good on late nights or weekends, but after work it's no good.

I may well rock up after my beautiful journey back on the Metro North. Unless you pick a bad bar. I have to move next weekend (the one after) though, so the wife may but the kaibosh on this without me having any control.

Yes, unfortunately Brooklyn will not be coming through as my out of townness extends until the 15th. Still, I hope to catch you all before I move down to San Antonio (long story) at the end of the month until school starts.
