NY Times
Their Reasons for Optimism

Aspiring bankers and administrators at the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business offered their thoughts on why some students are attracted to banking despite the industry's downturn.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/08/educa ... nking.html

1st Year Students, Quotes when asked why they are pursuing Investment Banking jobs in this tough economy:

1st Yr Student - Age 25, Male:
"Ultimately what you are looking at is where you are and where you'd like to be in the future."
" ....decided to go into investment banking because he likes the challenge of valuing companies..."
"Because his mind is set on getting into banking....the tough job market is not relevant to him."

1st Year Student - Age 30, Female:
"I think there probably will be an overhaul. there's gonna be a change."
"....idea of helping businesses achieve their goals using financial tools is what attracts her to the field...."
"....as a student, she has been encouraged by the increased optimism she has seen in conversations with banks..."

1st Year Student - Age 28, Male:
"I would say that the driver of business school students not pursuing banking as much is more job-based."
"...even in tough job markets, business school students recognize that any job in the field can mean hard work and good money..."
"...tough job market can drive away students more than a disillusionment with the field..."

Sarah Neher - Director of MBA Admissions:
"...alumni and other recruiters that they are talking to at the banks are so much more optimistic..."
"...about 40% of the school's applicants and students are interested in going into finance..."
"As a result of the financial fallout, students will increasingly have to be smart about knowing which banks and which segments of banking will be available when they graduate"

Director of Career Development Center:
"the downfall, financial crisis did open up a number of students' eyes"
"students reacted in various ways to the financial collapse and the tarnished reputation of the field"
"...students still need to be very clear about the reasons they want to be in banking....it's still all about the transferable skills and accomplishments. It's still a buyer's market..."
