Odd... TOEFL requirement [#permalink]
04 Nov 2005, 21:45
I was just told today by someone at Kellogg's admissions office that they would require a TOEFL score with my application. This threw me for a loop because, well, English is my first language. I'm from Canada, for crying out loud, not from Timbuktu. (Not that there's anything wrong with Timbuktu, but I digress...)
So this throws a monkey wrench into things because I never intended to write the TOEFL. I mean, it's a test of English as a foreign language, right? Not for people who have grown up speaking English, went to all English schools, worked entirely in English... and scored 47 on verbal and 6.0 on AWA on the GMAT, to boot! Here I was thinking that being bilingual (trilingual actually) would be an asset, but I guess it's a liability.
I've written to them again to clarify the decision, but I just thought Quebec applicants ought to know: Don't assume that just because you're Anglophone, they will exempt you from the TOEFL. Apparently, against all logic... not.
Interesting... I think it depends on the school then. I did not have to take the TOEFL when I went to LBS. I thought that if you could prove to them that you went to an english college, you would be fine
