Say total men surveyed =m
women surveyed =w

hence m+w=1400
1)
(50/100)w +(36/100 * m) = 42/100 * (m+w)
=>3/4*m=w also m+w=1400 => m,w can be calculated
SUFFI

2)This is not sufficient to find out men and women count

Hi Spriya,

I agree with 1st Statement.

But I believe st2 is also sufficient. Please clarify me if i am wrong.

42/100 * 1400 = m + w ( who said they considered engagin in research an essential goal. )

588 = m + w. As m given it is 288.

so w = 300.

It is sufficient.

1400 – 588 considered (42%)
Men = m
Women = w

(1) 0.36m+0.50w = 0.42 (m+w)
0.36m+0.50w = 588
SUFF

(2)
588 – 288 = 300 women

Agree. D should be the answer.

I suppose it's the "total number of women surveyed" we require over here and NOT women agreed to the point.....essential goal....

What's the OA for this one?
I chose (E)

1st statement clearly insuff as we can't do the split
2nd statement clearly insuff as we know nothing bout women

From both statatement we can know the # of women that considerd engaging in reseach an essential goal but we don't know how many of them were surveyed in total.

Let me know if this makes sense

Of the 1400 college teachers surveyed, 42% said they considered engaging in research an essential goal. How many of the college teacher surveyed were women?

(1) In the survey 36% of men and 50% of women said that they consider engaging in research activity an essential goal.
(2) In the survey 288 men said that they consider engaging in research activity an essential goal.

(1) m+w=1400 and 1400*0.42=0.36*m+0.5*w. Two unknowns two equations. Sufficient.
(2) From this we can calculate only that 1400*0.42-288=300 women consider engaging in research activity an essential goal. No other info. Not sufficient.

Answer: A.
