Of the five people in the city, 1 subscribed to magazine A, 2 subscribed to magazine B, 3 subscribed to magazine C, 5 subscribed to magazine D. If three people subscribed to two magazines and one person subscribed to all the magazines, how many magazines did the fifth person subscribe?

The fifth persor subscribed to 1 magazine. Magazine D.

This is not a proper way to solve question but I think it works ....

Total number of subscriptions = 1(A) + 2(B) + 3(C) + 5(D) = 11

3 people subscribe to 2 magazines each (6 subscriptions)
1 person subscribes to all 4 (4 subscriptions)

Total subscriptions is 10

The difference is the answer. 1 magazine.

This is how I solved this -

M T-----x y z w
----------------------
A 1-----1 0 0 0
----------------------
B 2-----1 1 0 0
----------------------
C 3-----1 0 1 1
----------------------
D 5-----1 1 1 1
-----------------------

T is total number of magazines.

x subscribed to all the magazines.

y,z, and w subscribed to two magazines each.

That leaves only one magazine left. Magazine D. For the fifth person.
