Of the staff members of a certain company, 64 percent salary is less than $5000,60 percent is more than$4000, 5 percent is 4900, 11 percent is 4300. What is the median?

does that mean there is only 4% between 4000 and 5000. so how can there be (5+11)% in the middle? Please help

A little tricky but quite easy

Let the number of staff be 100

From the problem it is understood that,

36 members salary is > 5000 ( as 64% of them are getting salary lesser than 5000)

40 members salary is < 4000

24 members salary is between 4000 - 5000 (64%-40%)

of these 24 member, 11 members get salary of 4300 & 5 members get salary of 4900:
For the rest 8 members (24-11-5) salary is unknown.

assuming any value for the salaries of these 8 members in the range of 4000-5000 will not alter the median since the median is the average of salary of 50th and 51st member.

when the data is arranged in ascending order 50th and 51st terms will only be 4300,4300 respectively.

Hence Median is 4300\$.
