C for me.
Since there are only two objects, comparative degree should be fine.
In E, "the" larger is not correct...the should be used with superlative degree.

C misses on parallelism. If we are using "the smaller", we have to use "the larger".

I think "the" is required only for "smaller" one because the emphasis is on the smaller one.

We cannot make "blind" parallelisms as we cannot say "the smaller". That makes me cross B, D and E. In my opinion, A is the best. I would not choose C as well because "the smaller" sound awkward to me. Official answer?

IMO e ..twin supernova so larger and smaller ...superlative degree not required..more recently is correct not most.. Posted from my mobile device

aren't the nouns implied? the larger refers to 'the larger among the two' likewise with 'more recently'. That's what I thought. Please correct me if I am wrong. The other 4 options were clearly wrong.

A-D all use "largest" or "most" incorrectly. E uses the comparative adjectives correctly (we only have 2, not 3 supernovas) and specifies the noun "supernova" with "the" larger.

I would go with E - it has to be larger, rather than largest or large, C is not parallel
