Hi,

The plot of the Bostonians centres on the rivalry between olive chancellor ,an active feminist ,with her charming and cynical cousin ,Basil Ransom ,When they actually find themselves drawn to the same radiant young woman whose talent for public speaking has won her an ardent following .

The above sentence after broken into clauses :

CL-1 :The plot of the Bostonians centres on the rivalry between olive chancellor ,an active feminist ,with her charming and cynical cousin ,Basil Ransom ,

CL-2: When they actually find themselves drawn to the same radiant young woman
CL-3 :whose talent for public speaking has won her an ardent following .

When and Whose are dependent clause marker .
All the green ones are subject verb pairs .

Meaning : The plot of something on the rivalry between A and B ,When they find themselves drawn to the same radiant young woman .The woman has talent for public speaking , and that talent has won her something .

The above sentence has 2 errors

1. idiom error: Between X with Y

It should be Between X and Y .

2. CL-1 does not have any verb

(A) rivalry between Olive Chancellor, an active feminist, with her charming and cynical cousin, Basil Ransom

(B) rivals Olive Chancellor, an active feminist, against her charming and cynical cousin, Basil Ransom

(C) rivalry that develops between Olive Chancellor, an active feminist, and Basil Ransom, her charming and cynical cousin

(D) developing rivalry between Olive Chancellor, an active feminist, with Basil Ransom, her charming and cynical cousin

(E) active feminist. Olive Chancellor, and the rivalry with her charming and cynical cousin Basil Ransom

Choice C rectifies the idiom error but clause-1 (Independent clause) still does not have any verb .
If the verb is absent ,then CL-1 is a fragment . How choice C becomes the correct choice .

Thanks,Deepak

Hi Deepak,

Thanks for posting your questions here. :-)

Let's take a look at the sentence once again:

CL-1 :The plot of the Bostonians centers on the rivalry between olive chancellor, an active feminist, with her charming and cynical cousin, Basil Ransom,
CL-2: when they actually find themselves drawn to the same radiant young woman
CL-3 :whose talent for public speaking has won her an ardent following.

I must say you have done a great job in splitting the sentences into a clause. However, you just missed the Verb for the first clause. The verb for Subject "The plot" is "centers" that faalls in the non-underlined portion of the sentence.

Hope this helps. :-)
Thanks.
Shraddha
