New Official Guides 2017 Edition Coming in June
What is the value of the OG?
Official Guides are books published by the creators of the GMAT and are one of the main/cheapest sources of official questions. You definitely want to have a copy of this book. Not having an Official Guide is a mistake that will cost you points, regardless of what method you use. Unlike other official materials such as GMAT Prep, Official Guide actually contains explanations to the questions. One of the main mistakes students make with the Official Guide is using it as a text book.... but it is not. It is just a collection of questions you can do to test your knowledge and pick up some patterns/get faster at solving problems, but it is not going to teach you Number Properties or Geometry, or rather - you don't want to learn that from here. So get a different set of decent books or a course (many are cheaper than books these days)What is new in OG2017?
As usual, there are some new questions - 130 of them in the OG 2017 (out of 900) and about 45 in the Verbal and Quant OG's (out of 300 questions each of them has). As a reminder, GMAC previously updated 25% of questions in the previous years (that's 225 questions out of 900 vs 130). So for some reason this is a short year.... It was never clear why questions get updated each year as some of them quite ancient and go back to OG 10 or some of the old GMAT Prep tests, but the general consensus is that, questions tend to be update to follow the latest patterns of the tests. Not so much that GMAC wants you to know the latest trends but rather they are removing some of the older stuff that is no longer relevant. Realistically nobody knows and it could just be a marketing ploy. In any case, seems like nothing revolutionary coming with this edition update and if anything, fewer new questions.Should you wait to buy your OG?
Not really. If you are wondering if you should start your prep now or wait for the OG to come out, I would urge you to start now and use whatever materials you decide to focus on. You can follow one of the study plans or go straight to the GMAT Books area.If I have OG2016, should I get OG2017?
Not really... I would instead recommend that you pick up an EP1 or EP2 or QP1 that has 404 questions for about the same price. Perhaps there is some hidden gems in the OG2017 but I am not expecting any and if you have OG2016, that should be sufficient for your prep. Are Verbal and Quant OGs the same thing as OG2017?
These are 3 different books and there is no question overlap between any of them. Verbal and Quant OG's provide additional 300 questions each for additional practice. They are optional though many choose to get them thinking they can get more specialized and harder questions but you will be disappointed. Most of the questions will be older and mid-level with few hard/new ones.
