On a certain road, 10 percent of the motorist exceed the posted speed limit and receive speeding tickets, but 20 percent of the motorists who exceed the posted speed limit do not receive speeding tickets. What percent of the motorist on that road exceed the posted speed limit?

A) 10 1/2%
B) 12 1/2 %
C) 15 %
D) 22%
E) 30%

Interesting! is it B 12.5%

Let's say there are 100 motorists.
10% exceeded speed limit and received tickets. = 10

20% of the motorists who exceeded speed limits did not receive tickets.
So 80% of them did receive speeding tickets, who are the 10 people we know.

Hence 80% of the exceeded + got tickets = 10
OR Actual number of people who exceeded = 100*10/80 = 12.5%

OK I think a venn diagram would be ideal for this...but I chose to do equations...

so lets see....10% of motorist got tickts for speeding.

20% of speeding motorist did not get tkts...that means 80% of speeding motorist got tkts
so let X be the number of speeding motorist...

.8X get tkts...= 10% of all motorist get speedin tkts

so 0.8x=0.1

x=1/8 =12.5% B it is...
