Question Stats:

74% (01:31) correct 25% (00:09) wrong based on 2 sessions
On Monday morning a certain machine ran continuously at a uniform rate to fill a production order. At what time did it completely fill the order that morning?

(1) The machine began filling the order at 9:30 a.m.
(2) The machine had filled 1/2 of the order by 10:30 a.m. and 5/6 of the order by 11:10 a.m.

1) Insuff. Only tells us when the work started.

2) Suff. Gives us the rate of work and how much of the job completed in x amount of time.

5/6 job - 1/2 job = 1/3 of the job was filled between 10:30 11:10 AM. So the rate is 1/120 (1/3 / 40 mins = 1/120). So.... 1 job is finished in 120 minutes or 2 hours.

I am sure the OA is B. i remember it from OG Quant book

Seems like B on its own is good enough

Stat 2 tells us that in 40 mins, 1/3 of the order was completed.

Therefore , to complete entire order takes 40x3 = 120 mins = 2 hours

I got this easy one wrong. Although the OA is B, I disagree with how they use the language.

Watch the language:"... filled 1/2 order BY 10:30AM". BY not AT. As I interpreted, it could be at 10:29AM, or at 10:01AM, or even at 00:01AM (so the machine filled 1/2 the order in 1 minute after midnight). All of the listed hours are BY 10:30AM (and also 11:10AM)

If "BY" is replaced by "AT", then this one is a no-brainer. I'm not a native speaker, is it because I don't understand GMAT English?
