On the basis of--/ and examinations of fossils [#permalink]
27 Nov 2008, 02:58
Based on the growth rates of large modern reptiles such as the Galapagos tortoise and examinations of fossils of juvenile dinosaurs, scientists estimate that the largest dinosaurs probably lived to be between 100 and 200 years old. (A) Based on the growth rates of large modern reptiles such as (B) On the basis of growth rates of large modern reptiles such as (C) Based on the growth rates of large modern reptiles like (D) On the basis of growth rates of large modern reptiles, like those of (E) Based on such growth rates as those of large modern reptiles like
I am confused between B & D. Please explain logic behind your choice.

B
Scientists can estimate only on the basis of smth., not based on. It leaves us with B and D usage of 'such as' is correct in this sentence because tortoise is a noun and an example.. 'like' is preferable in GMAT in situations when to actions are compared.

I am confused between B & D. Please explain logic behind your choice. I think D wrong b/c "like" does not modify "reptiles". That s why D can not convey the example here.

Thanks.. but i have one question.. here we are saying that growth rate of reptiles..... So we need to compare the growth rate of the Galapagos tortoise.. So,dont you think that it should be .. like those of? or for that matter such as those of....atletikos wrote: B

Igon, in this sentence Galapagos tortoise refers to 'reptiles', not to 'growth rates'. If it would refer to the first, then construction should have been smth. like that (without 'based on' or 'on the basis of'): Growth rates of large modern reptiles like THOSE of the Galapagos tortoise.... (like you have mentioned in your last post)
Hope this helps

let me chip in my 2 cents.
based on the growth rate of X such as Y
Y is an example of X. Hence Such as is correct, clear and concise. growth rate is of the reptiles as a whole and one such reptile is the GT

B is the clear choice. here Galapagos tortoise is an example of reptiles so such as is the best usage lgon wrote: Based on the growth rates of large modern reptiles such as the Galapagos tortoise and examinations of fossils of juvenile dinosaurs, scientists estimate that the largest dinosaurs probably lived to be between 100 and 200 years old.
