On the road B-School interview stress. Help [#permalink] New post 12 Sep 2010, 18:38
Hello everyone. I just scheduled an interview with the University of Wisconsin- Madison Business School. They require interviews for all applicants and they are going to be at an MBA fair in Seattle this week, so I figured now was my chance to go ahead and get that taken care of. I am in the Military, and I am planning on applying to schools, including Wisconsin, this fall. I haven't taken my GMAT yet (still in MGMAT prep course). I don't know ANYTHING about business school interviews. How should I be dressed? What kind of questions should I be ready to answer? What should I be prepared to discuss? The MBA fair is in two days. Please help.

Hello. I'm a beginner in the MBA application process myself, but my educated guess is that a business school interview is not unlike a job interview. That means that you will probably do well to dress in semi-formal to formal attire: slacks, dress shoes, button down shirt, and tie, at least. In fact, most men I saw at the Los Angeles QS MBA World Tour this weekend were in jackets as well.

As for the interview questions, the most common theme I've been seeing in my own research starts at the top level and works its way down: Why are you pursuing an MBA? Why now? And why this particular school?

It's unclear from your post, but have you completed the entire application to the University of Wisconsin-Madison's MBA program and just haven't done the GMAT yet? If you haven't, then download the application and review the essay questions--I've heard that sometimes the adcom will revisit those with you even though they have your application. Also, because you come from a military background, I would be willing to bet that they will want to explore this and how it uniquely qualifies you for business school admission--especially as it relates to your leadership abilities.

Best of luck!

wear suit and tie - go as "safe" as possible in color selection -white/blue etc. also study up on the school - know curriculum, culture etc. and avoid asking ques you can find on their brochure and you should prepare some ques.
