Picking D.
"compared to" is wrong. It shouldn't be used to compare two similar things.

Once positioned in space, the Hubble Space Telescope will capture light from sources twenty times fainter than those that can be detected.

selene, welcome back buddy...

agree with D because it needs "fainter than" to make the sentence logical and we cannot insert "compare to" in between "fainter" and "than". So A/B are out. also needs "those' cuz the comparision is between x sources and y sources.

compared to is wrong here, so A and B are out

C... "that" refers sources... incorrect
E... "detecting" is a gerund playing a verb role... NO-NO

D is the answer
