The last portion of the sentence starting with "BY"...suggests that the sentence is in passive voice..

that leaves us with A , C and D

C is incorrect ...no logical referent for "that"

D ...incorrect...we are comparing the difference in detection

capabilities of two instruments...

We need "compared to " to convey that idea

A .. is best

Praet,

Your detailed explanations and thoughts on answer choices are very helpful, as always!

But, D sounds better to me out of all the cases. "fainter than" sounds better than "fainter compared to"

Thanks.

i think A and B are wrong because "sources twenty times fainter compared to those " means campared to sources, but here we have to compare telescope. C seems decent.

whats the official answer?

IMO, D is correct.

"Fainter than" is the correct idiom. We are comparing sources to other sources. Which sources? Those (sources) that can be detected by ground based intruments.

I vote for D too.

"fainter" already implies there is a comparison ... also as written above "fainter than" is correct.

twenty times fainter - mean we need a than so A and B out.

now by ground-based instruments means we need passive voice in the underline area. So E out.

Now comparison is between two type of sources. So "than those" is meaningful. Undoubtedly D is the answer.

IMO answer is C !

Someone above said "THAT" in C has no clear referent. I disagree, THAT in option C refers to LIGHT.
Here we are comparing the LIGHT captured by Hubble Space Telescope and LIGHT detected by ground-based instruments. So, we need THAT not THOSE THAT as written in D.

Please provide OA.

D it is.

We are comparing "sources"

"Hubble telescope will capture light from SOURCES 20 times fainter than those [SOURCES] that can be dectected by ground based instruments."

Thanks seekmba, I agree we are comparing sources. I confused with "light".
