One of the more reliable methods of determining regional climatic conditions in prehistoric periods is to examine plant pollen trapped in glacial ice during ancient times. By comparing such pollen samples with spores taken from modern vegetation, scientists can figure out approximately what the weather was like at the time of pollen deposition. Furthermore, by submitting the prehistoric samples to radiocarbon dating techniques, we can also determine when certain climatic conditions were prevalent in that portion of the globe. Which one of the following may be inferred from the information in the passage? (A) The earth has undergone several glacial periods. (B) Radiocarbon dating can be corroborated by glacial evidence. (C) Similarities between prehistoric and contemporary climates do not exist. (D) Pollen deposition is a fairly continuous process. (E) Certain flora are reliably associated with particular climatic conditions. Explanation pls.

Between B and D
B (Plant pollen - trapped in glacier > glacial evidence provides support for RC dating)

Which one of the following may be inferred from the information in the passage? (A) The earth has undergone several glacial periods.Irrelevant (B) Radiocarbon dating can be corroborated by glacial evidence. Radiocarbon dating helps identify the time period or age of the evidence, while glacial evidence helps identify the weather (C) Similarities between prehistoric and contemporary climates do not exist. Irrelevant (D) Pollen deposition is a fairly continuous process. This has limited relevance, but our concern is the climatic conditions given the pollen, as opposed to whether pollen deposition is time-uniform (E) Certain flora are reliably associated with particular climatic conditions. Correct. My understanding is that since modern vegetation can help determine the weather and we compare this flora to modern vegetation, there is a reliable correlation between vegetation and climatic conditions
Explanation pls. Good question..+1 My guess is (E) for the reasons above

(A) The earth has undergone several glacial periods. [May be true – but nothing in the passage elicits this – eliminate it]
(B) Radiocarbon dating can be corroborated by glacial evidence.[As per argument, radio carbon dating technique is used to determine certain climatic condition – eliminate it]
(C) Similarities between prehistoric and contemporary climates do not exist.[Too extreme derivation – eliminate it]
(D) Pollen deposition is a fairly continuous process. [Nothing that can be inferred from the passage – eliminate it]
(E) Certain flora are reliably associated with particular climatic conditions.[True – clearly confirmed by the first sentence in the argument – hold it]
Answer: E

E. Tricky.
I thought D at first. E is more relevant.

I went with E as well. First reaction was B, then D, but ultimately E is the best and most relelvant.

Explanation pls. A: def cannot be determined C: no way. BDE. I had a hard time w/ these just like everyone else. My reason though is that E is almost certain as is stated in the passage. D: doesnt have to be continious. B: is more diffuclt to elim than D. E
