MGMAT Online CAT #1 [#permalink]

Please specify the source of these questions in the heading. This Question is from one of the known online full lenght tests. Anybody who has paid for the service will be disappointed to see these questions show up on the test and hence overrate the score. Not to mention the copyright laws.
Anyways, here is an explanation.
Study found that although X causes Y , Z can cause Y as well.
Here, X and Z should be parallel.
So, Govnt Policy = Mgmt Decisions. This eliminates B, D, E
Between A an C, A seems more appropriate.

A it is.
By omitting 'atleast as' all the other choices change the meaning of the sentence.

management decisions have at least as great an impact
decisions by management have a great impact
manager decisions impact greatly
decisions by a company’s management impact greatly
what a company’s management decides has a greater impact
at least as great an impact means an impact that is as great as or greater than...
None of the other options maintain this meaning perfectly, therefore A...ignoring grammer

management decisions have at least as great an impact
decisions by management have a great impact
manager decisions impact greatly
decisions by a company’s management impact greatly
what a company’s management decides has a greater impact
I don't have the OA yet, we can discuss.

I would go with A. There seems to be nothing wrong with it. "alteast as great as an impact" seems right to me.

I don't have the OA yet, we can discuss. IMO E ... you need a dependent clause .. A, B, C and D are run-on sentences.

here's a good explanation for this question http://www.manhattangmat.com/forums/mgm ... t1192.htmlIt was new to me that we can use 'as great', 'as genious', etc. without the second 'as' thanks for the question

A by POE...
can't be E because the original sentence included the possibility of the impact being AS GREAT AS, but in E, it's GREATER than...plus i think E is a bit too wordy

Yup OA is A. I had A and E in mind. This is because we definitely need a comparison. It is awkward to say "although x is great ..., y is great". We can have "although x is great.., y is also equally great" OR "although x is great...,y is greater than x". So only A and E were left.
I initially chose E but "what..." was a bit awkward in E and for A I had a problem with a single "as".

I will go with D.
A. management decisions have at least as great an impact (Awkward and unidiomatic) B. decisions by management have a great impact (This is ok but is lacking the parallel structure with the Subordinate clause.) C. manager decisions impact greatly(refering to in general manager decisions - changes the meaning.) D. decisions by a company’s management impact greatly (This maintains the parallel structure with the the Subordinate clause.) E. what a company’s management decides has a greater impact(Lacking parallel structure with the subordinate clause)

Economist wrote: A. Comparison is needed which is absent in D. But shouldn't there be something like "atleast as great as" for the structure to be idiomatic. And why do we need to have comparisions?

yes, but "as great an impact" is also correct technically. "although x is bla_bla, y is bla_bla"...something is missing here...it should be "although x is bla_bla, y is as bla_bla as X"....there should be some contrast by way of comparison with the usage of 'although'

E.A. management decisions have at least as great an impact B. decisions by management have a great impact C. manager decisions impact greatly D. decisions by a company’s management impact greatly E. what a company’s management decides has a greater impact we need to have a comparison here! in the original sentence there is a word "although", which is a signal to look for comparative adjective here. "greater" can be found only in choice E. PLUS the correct idiom here is "to have an impact ON" we can easily eliminate answer choices C and D.

OA is A
The original sentence correctly draws this comparison with the phrase “at least as great an impact.” Also, "government policy," "industrial sector," and "management decisions" are all correctly parallel
