Optional Essay: Recession Issues [#permalink] New post 18 Jul 2012, 17:44
In regards to recommendations and leadership roles I have been in a tough industry. I work in architecture and over the past four years throughout the recession, most of my supervisors have been laid off and many of my projects have been put on hold or canceled. Moving up has been impossible as my firm has struggled to stay afloat. (We've gone from 160+ employees down to 70).

I am going after an MBA as a career changer with 5 years experience. Should I describe this situation in the optional essay? I'm not sure how to put a positive spin on this other than it has made clear to me I need to change directions.

Good question. My gut feeling tells me that it's gonna be hard to make an interesting essay out of this, and that you might run the risk of sounding like you are "whining". You may be right, but positing that "I haven't got promoted but I would have if..." is very hard to do in any objective manner. But what you CAN do (if it helps) is show how you are the best by having survived.... i.e. writing things (in your regular essays) about how "Ina recession where 70% of my company lost their jobs, I was asked to take more and more projects" or things along those lines. That will you TRANSFORM the what-could-be-perceived-as negativity into something positive and good.
