Let me try my luck on (E).

(E) is the only sentence that does not contain "it".
IMO, what is likely to be destroyed is not "substance", but "chemical elements".

Except for E all other choices have dangling modifier.

so you It should Be E.

A and B have misplaced modifiers. In C and D, what does "it" refer to?

The techniques has the ability to looks wrong to me. Also the distance between the techniques and the proton.....is too much.
