Re: Out of the public's interest in details of and conflicts in [#permalink]
Same with you Anandnk, I hesitated between B and E and chose B.

A) is out because it is out of the public's interest (which is singular)that has grown a market...
C) the use of another is out of context. We are talking about other people's lives in general, no about another person's life. Another is an adjective used as one more in addition to one or more of the same kind.
D) is it the booming market that is bringing people or the television shows that are bringing people. The booming market is used as and adjective for what has developed from the people's interest but it is really the television shows that are bringing "regular" people ...

B and E's main difference is in the use of the conjugation tense.
B's use "are bringing" is appropriate because it implies continuity and that the television shows are still bringing those "regular" people on the television screen. Furthermore, E does not keep parrallel structures. "Out of the public's interest in details of and conflicts in other people's lives has grown a booming market for "reality" television shows that are bringing "regular" people onto the television screen with increasing frequency." Those two conjugated verbs should, together, demonstrate continuity in the idea of the growing market for reality TV shows and the constant and continuous gathering of "regular" people on those shows. Hence, the use of has grown and are bringing

Ok...the lords have spoken...

but is 'People' not singular...I don't remember the exact word but such words like people and community fall under some group.

Can anyone please clarify.

Vivek.

Good Lord...for once I'am right...

as I have said in my earlier post...'People' is singular...(there are some more words which fall in this category..would edit this post once I get them) and so it should be 'is' rather than 'are'.

:( Oh well, I should maybe just pick next time instead of giving a misleading explanation and then provide an explanation if answer is right :madd

I and kpadma were discussing it. This is a clone from OG and it appeared in Kaplan. D cannot be the answer. This is a question on meaning and subject verb agreement. I stand by Paul's explaination.
I really dont care if I differ from some source other than OG. All bootlegged version have these problems.

Only possible choices are B and E. There has to be coordinating conjuction to make the cluase after "that" to refer to the "Booming Market"

(a) other people's lives have grown a booming market for "reality" television shows that are bringing
(b) other people's lives has grown a booming market for "reality" television shows that are bringing
C) another person's life has grown a booming market for "reality" television shows that is bringing
(d) other people's lives has grown a booming market for "reality" television shows that is bringing
(e) other people's lives has grown a booming market for "reality" television shows that bring

A We need "has" to agree with "interest"...A is out.
B is incorrect.... "Are" does not agree with " booming market"
C "another" is incorrect... we need "other" to represent a group of people
E "bring" is not correct...we need a singular verb to agree with "booming market"

D is best

What rule one should follow to findout, what is "that" refers to , in
"that are bringing...."?

Yes, which is the subject, "booming market" or "television shows"?

I think it should be television shows which makes the answer D.

If "television shows" is the subject, then D cannot be the answer

I will go for B, becuase "that" is next to subject "Television Shows" hence "are" is correct.
