over and out; scored 730 Q50 V39 [#permalink] New post 09 May 2006, 06:03
I took the test yesterday got a score I am very happy with :-D. I have been a regular visitor to this site for the last month. Didnt really get much time to work on verbal or math problems that are discussed on this site. I did work on 100 odd questions from each of the sc1000, rc1000, cr1000 and math.

By far the most useful info for me was "share your experience" and thats the reason for my post (give what you receive :) ). As many of the recent posts mention the Quant is quite different from GMATPrep tests. Not that the questions are difficult, its just that they are pretty tedious. Quite a few questions where I couldnt see any shortcuts and had to employ brute force which offcourse costs time. I didnt really see any such questions on GMATPrep math section. I must have guessed (educated offcourse  ) on atleast 5-7 questions rather than wasting 5min each with no gurantees.

Midway through the quant section I pretty much gave up hope of scoring 7XX (especially since math is supposed to be my strength  ). But I went through the motions and probably wanted to see a miracle in the end. If what Ive read about CAT is correct; it seems the CAT does figure out your score early on and after that even if you get every third or fourth question wrong it won't punish you. I reached the last question with 50 seconds. I selected an answer to prempt time-expired but somehow got so engaged with the question that didnt confirm it on time.

Took the break; had some water and started the verbal section. I think the verbal section went pretty unremarkably. The questions were more or less like GMATPrep. I finished the section just in time. Verbal has been my weekness to the point that after completing any verbal practice test I wouldn't even know if I did good or bad till I see the results.

I completed the survey pressed the 'generate score' button, closed my eyes and said a prayer. I was totally surprised to see the result.

Here were my scores from practice tests :-

Kaplan
--------
Test-1 Q50 V32 630
Test-2 Q39 V33 600
Test-4 Q50 V32 630

800score
----------
Test-1 Q44 V40 680
Test-2 Q44 V34 630
Test-3 Q51 V44 780
Test-4 Q43 V43 700
Test-5 Q45 V37 660

GMATPrep
-----------
Test-1 Q49 V40 730

I guess my practice test scores were all over the park which probably ment that my mood, concentration etc were probably having major impact.

The takeaway from my post at the minimum is you can never be sure how the CAT is judging you even if you feel you are doing good/bad. So the old advice of taking the test one question at a time holds true. 8-)

Hope this of help.
