C)..."over five thousand years ago" modifies the act of preparing and so it must be as close as possible to it.

C is the correct answer.

It should read as .

Archaeologists have discovered that Mesopotamian cooks were preparing chicken with coriander and tamarind, just as Egyptian cooks are still doing today.

putting a comma after that , over five thousand years ago, allowes to provide additional information.

putting a coma after discoverd would mean that discovery was done over 5 thousand years ago.

so C is the right answer.

I vote for C

because here much caution is advised, since the other sentences change the meaning. Archeologists have NOT discovered over 5000 years ago, but over 5000 years ago, mesopotamian cooks etc etc
