In my opinion, we can best differentiate ourselves by talking about our long-term passions, which usually result from an event/experience of the past.
I'm not sure how much can I write if I write about something that has influenced me recently.
That's a good point, and I agree, past experiences that we've had time to reflect upon are the ones that mostly shape who we become.
However, I have a feeling the adcom also wants to see how we react to changes and stimuli from our environment, whether we think about current events and how responsive we are to them. This kind of dynamics is important in business, where the pace is quick and one has to respond and adapt to the constantly changing world. Thoughts on recent events also show a curiosity and a willingness to think about what is happening around us.
I think I'm going to lash out a little and write about the construction of the society of my home country. I recently read a book which refuted the general opinion that we only have a (very broad) middle class in our country. It made me think very differently about the organization of the society in my home country, and about my family and its roots. I think I'll also tie it together with a general concept of class system in society, something which has interested me the past few years.
