Re: The rise in the price of gold and an increase in demand has [#permalink]

We need plural verb so it's between D and E
E makes "try" and "mine" disjunct while they should be an integral part of "to try to do X"

Paul, I thought it required a singular verb, because
'The rise................has convinced'
but looks like my understanding is wrong, can you tell me why this requires a plural verb.

The rise in price AND increase in demand

We have two subjects here.

Whenever confused about the subject ask youself question for the verb for e.g here

what caused the miners to bla bla bla?

ans: the rise and the demand

2nd e.g consider a very basic sentence

Sun rises in the east

what rises in the east? ans---Sun so sun is the subject

Ram and Shyam went to the market.

who went to the market? ans: Ram and Shyam

I hope that helps

Thanks saurabhmalpani, Just realized my mistake - did not read the sentence fully - saw 'The rise' and immediately concluded that it requires a singular verb.

'The rise................has convinced' ... but you seem to have left 'and increase in the'.

So 'the RISE of -- and INCREASE of --' HAVE convinced the ...
So, naturally the answer is (D). Hope that helps.
