Ranked among great mathematical scientists such as Archimedes, Kepler, and Newton, Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham, who was born in Iraq in 965 C.E., had experimented extensively with light and vision, laying the foundation for modern optics and also the notion of science being based on experiment as well as on philosophical arguments.
A. al-Haytham, who was born in Iraq in 965 C.E., had experimented extensively with light and vision, laying the foundation for modern optics and also the notion of science being based on experiment as well as-->had experimented is wrong usage. It implies that he started experimenting before he was born
B. al-Haytham, born in Iraq in 965 C.E., experimented extensively with light and vision, laying the foundation for modern optics and for the notion that science should be based on experiment as well as-->perfectly put forth in the most precise manner.
C. al-Haytham, born in Iraq in 965 C.E., and who experimented extensively with light and vision, thereby laid the foundation for modern optics and also for the notion that science should be based on not only experiment but also-->and who is not required here ,makes it more verbose
D. al-Haytham was born in Iraq in 965 C.E., and had experimented extensively with light and vision, laying the foundation for modern optics and for the notion that science should be based on not only experiment but also-->similar to A
E. al-Haytham was born in Iraq in 965 C.E., experimenting extensively with light and vision and laying the foundation for modern optics and for the notion of science being based on experiment as well as-->parallelism error

I am not clear on the usage of the word laying...

This question is testing 'Concrete nous and action nouns'.

Please somebody educate me.

No, "experimented" is the main verb. The basic sentence is as follows:

Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham experimented extensively with light and vision.

A non-essential modifier "born in Iraq in 965 C.E" is inserted after Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham. This modifier refers to Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham.

The sentence now becomes:
Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham, born in Iraq in 965 C.E, experimented extensively with light and vision.

Another past participial modifier "Ranked among...." is added before Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham. This modifier refers to Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham

Finally another present participle modifier "laying the foundation for ...." is added at the end of the sentence. This modifier refers to the whole clause " Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham, born in Iraq in 965 C.E, experimented extensively with light and vision."

The complete sentence is as below:

Ranked among...., Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham, born in Iraq in 965 C.E, experimented extensively with light and vision, laying the foundation for......

Thanks !! sayantanc2k
I had the idea that any verb-ed after comma usually assumes the role of a modifier.

A. al-Haytham, who was born in Iraq in 965 C.E., had experimented extensively with light and vision, laying the foundation for modern optics and also the notion of science being based on experiment as well as
WRONG:- Not parallel FOUNDATION FOR MODERN PHYSICS and ALSO THE NOTION (ALSO FOR THE NOTION).
HAD EXPERIMENTED is also wrong
o------BORN (YEAR 1900) -----HAD EXPERIMENTED (IN YEAR 1930)----------> Direction of flow of time
Had + past is used for events that occured in older past, for recent past such a construction is wrong

B. al-Haytham, born in Iraq in 965 C.E., experimented extensively with light and vision, laying the foundation for modern optics and for the notion that science should be based on experiment as well as
CORRECT:- Parallel, correct idiom - as well as, correct tense timeline

C. al-Haytham, born in Iraq in 965 C.E., and who experimented extensively with light and vision, thereby laid the foundation for modern optics and also for the notion that science should be based on not only experiment but also
WRONG :- Use of and as a conjunction is wrong. If you read the sentence after AND it does not have a clear reference for "who". Also The sentence that starts after AND should always be an independent cause , hence using AND is incorrect.

D. al-Haytham was born in Iraq in 965 C.E., and had experimented extensively with light and vision, laying the foundation for modern optics and for the notion that science should be based on not only experiment but also
WRONG:- Use of AND is wrong. Incorrect tense time HAD EXPERIMENTED
o------BORN (YEAR 1900) ----- HAD EXPERIMENTED (IN YEAR 1930)------ DIED (IN YEAR 1960)-------> Direction of flow of time
Had + past is used for events that occured in older past, for recent past such a construction is wrong

E. al-Haytham was born in Iraq in 965 C.E., experimenting extensively with light and vision and laying the foundation for modern optics and for the notion of science being based on experiment as well as
Wrong:- Experimenting is wrong. Is he still carrying out the experiment. NO. He died 4000 year back. How can he still be experimenting

The answer stands on a couple of basics. We must either know them or learn them by heart to apply swiftly in the hall. \

A. al-Haytham, who was born in Iraq in 965 C.E., had experimented extensively with light and vision, laying the foundation for modern optics and also the notion of science being based on the experiment as well as --- Did he experiment before he was born? Absurd- dump. The second concrete pop-up error is the use of 'being' as a modifier.

B. al-Haytham, born in Iraq in 965 C.E., experimented extensively with light and vision, laying the foundation for modern optics and for the notion that science should be based on the experiment as well as --- the correct choice amending the errors of A.

C. al-Haytham, born in Iraq in 965 C.E., and who experimented extensively with light and vision, thereby laid the foundation for modern optics and also for the notion that science should be based on not only experiment but also --- Just one fact: Whenever you see a correlative conjunction, parallelism is the first one to be cleared. 'not only experiment' and 'but also on' are unparallel.

D. al-Haytham was born in Iraq in 965 C.E. and had experimented extensively with light and vision, laying the foundation for modern optics and for the notion that science should be based on not only experiment but also --- 1. Same error as in C. 2. verb tense mismatch of using past perfect for the later event.

E. al-Haytham was born in Iraq in 965 C.E., experimenting extensively with light and vision and laying the foundation for modern optics and for the notion of science being based on the experiment as well as -- 1. Weird clause. It gives the notion that the legend was experimenting as he was being born. 2. Science being based is wrong as in A.

The answer is B

(A) al-Haytham, who was born in Iraq in 965 C.E., had experimented extensively with light and vision, laying the foundation for modern optics and also the notion of science being based on experiment as well as "modern optics" and "also the notion..." are not parallel. Incorrect use of past perfect "had experimented" - it implies that he experimented before he was born. Eliminate.

(B) al-Haytham, born in Iraq in 965 C.E., experimented extensively with light and vision, laying the foundation for modern optics and for the notion that science should be based on experiment as well as Correct answer - "for modern optics" and "for the notion..." are parallel, so are "on experiment" and "on philosophical arguments".

(C) al-Haytham, born in Iraq in 965 C.E., and who experimented extensively with light and vision, thereby laid the foundation for modern optics and also for the notion that science should be based on not only experiment but also "experiment" and "on philosophical arguments" are not parallel. Eliminate.

(D) al-Haytham was born in Iraq in 965 C.E., and had experimented extensively with light and vision, laying the foundation for modern optics and for the notion that science should be based on not only experiment but also Same past perfect usage error as in (A) and parallelism error as in (A). Eliminate.

(E) al-Haytham was born in Iraq in 965 C.E., experimenting extensively with light and vision and laying the foundation for modern optics and for the notion of science being based on experiment as well as "experimenting" implies that he was born in the process of experimenting. Eliminate.

Hope this helps.
