Re: Engineers - Is the free Vocaz Chances Indication accurate? [#permalink]
A general LOR is not a bad idea, and if you can ask your recommender to make it look like he initiated it that's even better. Also, the letter can generally address some of the tipical recommender questions, like strengths and weaknesses, the applicant's managerial skills and potential for success.

Right, since recommender questions are usually similar in most schools, so the general LOR can address the main aspects of the candidate.
The problem with an extra rec is that it can not always be submitted throught the online application. Some schools allow it to be sent by email, but what about the rest? any ideas?

They actually address this issue in a separate page, see here:

Thanks for the link.
So they specifically say regarding the extra rec:

"If you send the extra recommendation in hard copy, and if you didn't see the actual letter that the recommender sent (while providing the recommender with a draft/example, you are not supposed to see what the recommender actually sent), ask the recommender to seal the envelope (for example, with a scotch tape or a sticker) and sign across the seal."

It makes sense to do this if the school doesn't allow you to register more than 2 recommenders in the online system.

Regarding the extra rec, I don't think you should overflow the admission committee with too many materials, they already have a lot to read. Maybe wait with it until you are waitlisted, and then the extra rec might be more useful.

Great tip, I agree - too much materials can actually work against you.
We have to carefully stick to the school instructions and be very smart about any unusual step. Same goes for the optional essay, you should write it only if you have something important to add.

My suggestion would be that you start applying early to the your desired schools.

What do you guys think about the Asian MBA programs? What about their admission chances comparing to the US b-schools? I saw some Asian schools like HKUST and IIMA ranked very high in the latest FT rankings, and I wonder if it's hard to get in…

I got an invite from a school and there was a 10 point difference. This tool is BS and made to scare people into buying their product.

I'm not sure regarding the admission chances to Asian programs, but you can check their websites for class profile and compare it with profiles of US programs to get some perspective.

I'm a lurker on this forum, but couldn't help responding to this post.

I was asked to use Vocaz tool about a year ago, when I was a newbie and knew little to nothing about application process. The output showed that my profile wasn't good enough even for regional schools and as stupid as it sounds, it did bring my confidence down (if only for a week). This year, I've admission offers from two elite schools.
Vocaz tool is extremely misleading and unreliable. I'd highly recommend against using it or even 'checking it out'.

Congratulations on your admission!
Could you share what was the prediction/score you got? and what helped you gain admission? were there elements on your profile which the tool didn't take into consideration?

Speaking of elements which the tool didn't take into consideration, I think the interview is a big factor. It is not right to look at this like the application can get you admitted instantly, you have to be good enough to get invited to an interview, and then do well on the interview which is mainly up to you!

I agree, it's an important element but a tough one to score... anyway, I think most candidates invited to an interview are eventually admitted. And it's not entirely true that the interview is completely up to you, you can do some preparation and practice.
