Hello!

I've just done my first CAT after doing reading the books and I'm truly disappointed. Score is 460 with Q35 V 20. I was able to finish all the questions with about 10 minutes remaining on each section. I realized that I forgot some of the strategies mentioned in the MGMAT books and have to go over these again. Also, I haven't done any OG questions so far.
My exam date is May, 7th, so I roughly have one month of studying left. I'm working full-time, so that's another problem. I was thinking about doing 64 questions per day now, 8 for each section, and freshing up the concepts by doing the questions...

Does this sound like a good plan, or should I do something else? I need a score of 600 btw.

Thanks in advance,

Andreas

Hi andih,

I also scored low on a practice CAT so I started to work on my math fundamentals. And I am still studying the verbal part. Right now I am putting 60% to 70% on the verbal and 30% to 40% on my math basics. A GMAT instructor from Veritas gave me some useful advice though. You should identify where you are weak. Based on this GMAT calculator, you will need a Q40 and V33 and it is possible in one month. I would list all the practice material you are using because it will help others evaluate your situation better (they will tell you to do more Official Guide questions). Do you have to take it in May? I might have to delay my test to make sure I am properly prepared.

Check out the advice from this Magoosh instructor. Stroll towards the bottom of the post.

Good Luck! :-D

Thanks for the reply. Material I used were the MGMAT books and now OG12

I could re-schedule the test, admission deadline is July, 1st. I set this date in early May so I still have the time to take a second try if needed...

Given your score you are better off going back to the strategy guides and re-learning the concepts. A 460 shows that your fundamentals are not there and doing more questions wont really solve the problem.

Thanks for your reply, you are definetly correct that some fundamentals are still missing (I'm reviewing the questions at the moment). I hope this doesn't sound wrong or anything, but why can't I work on that by just doing the OG questions and train the concepts this way. Problem is, I'm a really practical guy and I hate just doing theory all the time ;)

Take it from someone who had your approach (grind out practice questions/CATS and learn from the mistakes). My CAT results stagnated right below the 600 mark. I found myself encountering questions where I literally had no idea what was going on. In fact, on my most recent CAT, I scored Q40 with 22 incorrect answers.

I could've spent that time more productively by sticking to learning the fundamentals. Beneath the smoke-and-mirrors of tricks the GMAT throws at you, are questions that simply test your comprehension of the logic behind basic math/verbal concepts.

I'm just over two weeks out from my test. I highly recommend you re-think your study strategy and don't waste valuable time, as I did.
