Gokhra and Samwong, thanks for the kind words!

Congratulation! This is the first 800 debrief that I have ever seen. Good luck with your application.

Despite my score, I don't imagine my debrief will be more helpful than that of someone who had a more disciplined study routine. But thanks again!

Congrats on that amazing score!! This is only the second 800 debrief I've, and I've seen A LOT of debriefs.

So where are you applying? My advice is to start working to boost other areas of your application. You don't want to come off as just a bookworm! BSchool is so much more than that, and we've heard stories of 800s being rejected. Of course, an 800 is amazing and will be a huge gold star on your application, but just remember, it's not a free pass! Work hard on the rest of your apps

Ditto on the congrats... and thanks much for taking time to write a thorough debrief! Between your perfect score and Peace Corps background, I would think you'd be able to get into any of the top tier schools. Best wishes!

Wow... very impressive. I do not believe we have had anyone with an 800.... yet.
Congratulations. I did not realize there was only one test center in Ukraine but searching through GMAC's site, that appears the case - sad.

I can only imagine what is going through your mind right now :)

At first I was really excited about my score (naturally), but now that I've read more I'm anxious that my application will be unduly scrutinized or read with bias. I know my work experience is my biggest shortcoming, but I have several good stories about leadership and cross-cultural relationship building, so maybe adcomms will take a gamble on my future potential. Or maybe they'll go with one of the 8,000 applicants who has it all.

I have been trying to narrow down schools (and I would appreciate advice about the application process and which schools might match my goals). I really want to get a position in management consulting post-MBA (assuming I get accepted somewhere). Working as a consultant would cement and expand upon the things I would learn in b-school, and I think the analytical rigor would suit me well. It would be a dream to work in the Kyiv or Moscow office of one of the big three, since I've learned to speak Russian since being here and developed a fondness for this region. I would love to work with both large clients expanding into eastern Europe and small local companies interested in growth. My long-term dream is to consult for socially-driven small companies or start one of my own.

Considering my goals, I want to study strategy and entrepreneurship. I want a program with high consulting placement and the opportunity for a summer internship (so most of Europe is out). I'll try to gain relevant experience between the end of my Peace Corps service (December) and next fall, but even if I do, I'll still need a strong internship.

My top choices are Kellogg (because of team emphasis, consulting placement, location) and Booth (because of strategic management, entrepreneurship, location, career services), but I recently started researching Tuck (because of strategic management, entrepreneurship, amazing alumni) and it could be a good choice too. However, Tuck is much more selective than the Chicago area schools because of Tuck's low student intake. I'm at a bit of a disadvantage because I'm too far away for campus visits to be an option. Booth had one informational event in Kyiv in May (that I traveled 20 hours each way to attend) but for the most part Ukraine doesn't get a lot of recruiters. I consider Fuqua and London Business School to be my alternate choices. They both have 2-year programs and good consulting placement. LBS would probably better assist me in beginning a career outside the US. Fuqua has a special scholarship program for returned Peace Corps volunteers (but it might occupy the whole summer? I need to get an answer on that). The more I think about it, the less I think I would attend Fuqua if I was dinged everywhere else. I anticipate work experience being the most likely reason for a ding, and in that case I'd keep working and reapply to my dream schools.

I welcome any advice regarding where to apply, how to apply, or how to get business work experience coming straight from Peace Corps. My current plan is to look for a position with a small business or boutique consulting firm in the Chicago area (which is where I'll be after Peace Corps).

Wow Thank for your debrief! I mailed it to a friend with a caption like this: "1st unbelievable gmatclub 800 debrief" :)) I really get a lot of motivations from your debrief. Especially it confirms my thinking on not taking time too hard during the practice time. Just like you, I see getting the gist of the problem is way more important to practice for 2min/question at the early of the training process.
The answering-zombie part and the 40 questions per practice time were great. I normally take around 15 questions per section per time - and review intensively right afterward. Do you suggest I increase the number? such as 30/40 like yours? as I want to remember the just-done questions and learn the concept right at the point. But I guess this does not build stamina for me.
I also face difficulties during SC. As it has way lot of rules to remember. Do you have a closer advice on this? because I see some of the SC questions test very close usage of a word such as "As", or an idiom, or even diction of a word.
I often see people get really struggle with Verbal; thus, I really amazed by how some persons can finish verbal part with a lot of time ahead???? while taking the verbal, did you both read fast and understand deep? do you take note during RC?
Thank a lot in advance! Your debrief was among the ones stroke me the most in this forum! WoW :D

Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad my debrief motivated you!

The number of questions that constitutes a decent study session will depend on your ability. Personally, when I practiced 40 at a time, I would usually miss just one question in the whole set (but once, when I solved 100, I missed 5 of the first 15! ). If I had stopped after 15, I would have found that there were no wrong answers to review. The caveat here is that I did review my correct answers as well as my incorrect ones; but I didn't review all of my correct answers. I would look through my correct answers and identify the questions where I hadn't been 100% sure of my answer, then I'd read the answer explanation (in OG 12) and really focus on the correct answer and why it was correct. When you focus on the explanations for correct answers, especially for verbal questions, you begin to see things the way the test writers see them. Then you can identify the correct answers yourself! For this reason, I highly recommend study materials that provide answer explanations. OG 12 had them. The GMATPrep software had them in practice questions, but not for the practice exams, unfortunately.

Your study sessions should resemble a workout in some ways. You should do enough to make the process worthwhile, but you don't need to kill yourself. If you push yourself too hard, you will be disinclined to practice again after 24 or 48 hours (just like physical exercise). Ideally, you should enjoy solving problems. I wish you the best of luck!

Wow! 800!! Too good!! It is an understatement to say your score is decent or good.
One question about the new GMAT: was the test based on JAVA or on Adobe AIR?

I couldn't tell. It looked exactly like the practice tests provided in both the old and new versions of GMATPrep.

Cool! I hope you get into a good program. You will probably also be contact by a lot of Ph.D. programs, I believe. You might as well use the oportunity to join mensa, they will accept anyone who did better than th 95 percentile. Might be nice on your resume. Congrats on a ridiculous score.

I don't claim that luck played no part. I know that I didn't get every quantitative question right; otherwise I would have gotten a quantitative score of 60

no, 51 is the highest score on both sections. the slots from 52 to 60 on the scale are not populated.

i don't know why gmac continues to present the scale as though it went all the way up to 60. perhaps to mess with the heads of super-perfectionist types? but, ya, you can't score higher than 51.
