Hi:

Would really appreciate if mbaMission can share its inputs on my queries.

I had given my GMAT this January and secured 730. However, due to family, personal and financial priorities I do not think I would be able to apply in schools before 2014 fall. By then I will have over 8 years of experience. My years of experience certainly fall beyond work-ex brackets for almost all full time MBA programs that I've been targetting. Will this seriously hamper my prospects of getting an admit in schools? How's 8-9+ work-ex viewed by schools? I understand I can still articulate my needs pretty well in my essays to stand a chance but how do ground realities stack up? Should I be considering an EMBA instead? Does an EMBA really make a difference to your profile?

Please advise.

Hello!

Great question. Generally speaking, EMBAs are for managers on the executive track who have 10-15 years experience who are not looking to switch careers. While you're definitely on the older side for full-time programs (I am guessing you'll be 30 when you apply?), this certainly won't make or break your application. I would recommend targeting schools that have a higher average age (there are some schools that are starting to lean towards younger candidates). I'd still focus on full-time MBA programs, though.

Well the funny part is I'll be 28-29 by the time I will apply (yes I did start working pretty early:) ), almost at par with the average age of (27-28) of almost all B-Schools. But as I was reading in some of the blogs, schools are concerned about post MBA employ-ability of students with higher number of years of experience but I guess then it all boils down to how well you can justify "why MBA now?" aspect in your application. Definitely will try FT MBA programs.

Yes - you are exactly right. It will be important for you to make it very clear to the ad com that you need an MBA and that everything you've done up until this point has led you here. You need to show that you've really thought about where you're headed, what other routes you could take to get there, and why the MBA is the right one.
