So here's a hypothetical--I apply and get accepted. I love the school, think it's a great fit, and Admissions agrees. Then, I both get offered a fantastic new position at my current company (one that will put me closer to my career goals and make me an even stronger MBA applicant), and I fall in love. Sounds funny, but I'm guessing this has happened more than a few times, and it's no small thing to consider when you're in it deep.
I understand why schools don't like to allow deferrals, but admissions staff are people too. If I'm still very excited about going to Wharton, but just need some more time before I'm ready to go, would Admissions consider the deferral request? Or at least, look upon reapplication the following year favorably (and waive the second application fee)...
You can always ask, but I think they're only open to deferrals that have a very intense personal reason behind them. For example, you get diagnosed with cancer or someone close to you dies.
