Always better to know where you truly stand. Because it allows you to take action!
You are right though. Don't rush things. Retake your GMAT, focus on that. apply another year. the payoff for your patience will be enormous!

Do you think I would be a competitive candidate if I raise my score up enough to apply round 2 for some of those schools? And what type of score range do you think I need to obtain to be a competitive candidate? Really appreciate your feedback!

If you can get it done by R2, sure why not???
In general, having more than the average (or 50th percentile) is good. Of course if you have 20 points less or more then you can also apply with competitive chances of getting in. these are of course not the only criteria, but still, a very important one.
