Range is the subject- has must be the verb Only D and E remain. E shifts the personage of the pronoun from second person personal pronoun ‘your’ in the first part to the third person impersonal pronoun - one in the following part of the clause, which is grammatically incorrect. Now we have just D, which is the correct choice.

Hi Daagh,

I have a question...

I understand the subject here is range but shouldn't the verb be have

For eg : One of the many subjects are....

Not clear here

Thanks

I am afraid no; because, 'of the graduate programs' is no more than a modifier and a middleman that describes the range ; So the verb will remain singular. In your example also, the subject is only one. And the students and hence it will be wring to say one of the students are.' You must use the verb - is -in this case too; can you give me the full version of the clause where ‘one of the students are’ is appearing?
It is a different matter if you say, ‘one of the students who are”. Then because of the intrusion of the relative pronoun which stands for the plural students, the subject shifts from one to students and hence the verb can be ‘are’

For a clearer picture on this issue, could you please refer to the usage part of the link given below in the freedictionary.com?

Menlo University‘s range of graduate programmes have been developed to fulfil your needs whether you intend to pursue a career in industry, business, government, NGOs or academia, and whatever your background.

Range is the subject - singular thus C-D with have been out.

A. have been developed to fulfil your needs whether you intend to pursue a career in industry, business, government, NGOs or academia, and whatever
B. has been developed to fulfil your needs if you intend to pursue a career in industry, business, government, NGOs or academia, or whatever
If must be used to express consequence and here consequence is missing.
C. have been developed to fulfil your needs whether you intend to pursue a career in industry, business, government, NGOs or academia, and whatever

D and E are final contenders.
D. has been developed to fulfil your needs whether you intend to pursue a career in industry, business, government, NGOs or academia, and whatever CORRECT.
E. has been developed to fulfil your needs whether one intends to pursue a career in industry, business, government, NGOs or academia, or whatever

Use of pronoun one is not correct in E.
One is a special pronoun:
In a sentence if one is referring to same subject or person then all other pronouns used in that sentence must be of it's family i.e either one or one's. We can not replace one with you or yours in half of the sentence and keep one or one's in rest of the sentence.

For details you can refer chapter 2 of MGMAT verbal foundation page 34, special note about the pronoun "one".

e.g
INCORRECT : People who wants to become politician should keep one's reputation spotless.
CORRECT : One who wants to become politician should keep one's reputation spotless.

INCORRECT : One must be careful to account for all sources of income on your tax return.
INCORRECT : One must be careful to account for all sources of income on one's tax return.

Thats the only grammatical error in option E and thus option D is correct.

a range of X or a range of Xs

We are talking about range, which in this case is singular. And singular nouns take singular verbs. Hence, "a range of Xs has" is correct.

Thus, A and C are eliminated.

One should be careful when one meets her. You should be careful when you meet her. Either both the pronoun references are one or you. A mix is a dangerous combination.

Eliminate E.

B v/s D.

If x then y. If is used in case of a condition. For example: If you study, (then) you get an 800 in the test.
This is not the case in B. Hence, eliminate B.

Answer is D.

Here Range is the subject of the sentence. Thus, A, C are out.
In choice, B. The use of If is incorrect. If can only be used as an conditional. Whether is used for alternatives.
Between D and E use of one is not parallel in the sentence.

Hence, D

range of graduate programmes - range is singular, thus, the verb must be HAS.
A and C are eliminated right away.
whether vs. if - whether is for uncertainties/if is for providing cause-effect relationship. If is incorrect in this context.
B is out.

between D and E:
range has been developed to fulfill your needs whether X, Y, or Z
range has been developed to fulfill your needs whatever your background.

in E - we have ONE - in the underlined section, while we have YOUR in the non-underlined. One is incorrect.

moreover, both D and E present incorrectly the list... NGO comma OR academia.

but D is the best here though...

Can someone please explain me why we have used "and" in option D at the last and whether the use of "and" is correct in option D?

I was confused between D and E but marked ans as E just because it used "or" instead of "and"
Can someone please confirm if the use of "and" in option D is correct?

Hello Vatsal7794,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, the intended meaning is that this range of programs is designed to fulfill one's needs regardless of two given factors - what field one intends to pursue a career in and what one's background is - thus, the use of the "and" is needed, as the sentence needs to convey cohesion rather than contrast.

We hope this helps.
All the best!
